January 23-29 Trip to Upper Egypt

We took a trip with the other missionary couple, Dave and Maire Whipple to Upper Egypt to check on a few humanitarian projects and see some of the sites. We went to the Upper Dam here. It was very windy.
We also took a boat to our hotel, the Pryamisa.
Christian Dornelas, our Area humanitarian coordinator came with us to Aswan. We took a little boat across part of the Nile to see a stella that mentions 7 years of famine.
Here is the stone that mentions 7 years of famine. It is cracked because number of years ago some group tried to steak it and thought to crack it in half to haul it away.
We are with the Whipples and Christian at the stone.
This is Abu Simbol. The temple was going to be covered by water when the high dam was built, so they carved it up and moved it up about 300-400 feet and reassembled it. What a feat that was done in the late 1960s. It is about a 2 1/2 hour car ride from Aswan.
Kathleen at one of the temples. There was a hole here between the rooms.
Kathleen and I in one of the temples.
We went to a Nubian village, which was rather underwhelming, but we did get to hold a small crocodile.
This was a painting in the Nubian village.
Sunset in Luxor. After Awan we traveled by car to Luxor and stayed 3 nights there.

Same as above

The paint is original and very beautiful.
This is the only writing where Israel is mentioned.

This is a stove that is still in use in Luxor. The family next to it cooks their bread here.
