End of Feb 2025 Teaching English, Humanitarian Projects, and Daud's business
We began teaching a group of 25 Muslim young people at an NGO, Resala. Kathleen and I trade off teaching. We had over 400 people wanted to join the class and, even though they only cleared 25 to join the class, there was 50 who showed up for the first class. The students have reasonable English skills and we are trying to push them. One of the things we do each week is to read a section from the book, Charlie's Monument".
Kathleen also began piano lessons this week. This class is the beginning to lead music material. She will have one more group lesson and then will need to schedule individual times. This is the main room in what we call our Gathering Center. It is 1.2 miles from the building where we meet for church and very close to where many of our South Sudanese members live.
We visited a project we funded. This is an NGO called Terre do Homme and they provide services to the poor and refugees. The two men that took us around the project were refugees from Syria.
This is a sewing class they sponsor.
We also funded a project to help homeless families. The lady and her 2 children below were on the street when the NGO found them. The helped her find this apartment and provided her with a couple of beds, a hot plate, and tiny refrigerator. When we visited she commented (translated for us) that she does not use the hot plate, as she does not have money for the electricity. She makes 4,000 EGP ($80) per month and has to pay 3,000 EGP ($60) for rent each month. She does a few other things to make ends meet.
This is the lady and her children who were homeless. He son is autistic and the family is from South Sudan.
Here is a street near to the family's apartment. The banners are out as Ramadan would start in a week.
The other couple here, Roy and Karen Phillips, have started working with the young single adults. Our district president has asked them to have an activity each week. This was their first activity night and they had 17 people. Then on the next Friday after church they had a "linger longer" with food and had 20 come. This is amazing as we only average about 40 people total in our sacrament meeting in that branch.
We visited Daud Hikam's shop that the church helped fund and allow him to have training. He is a counselor in the branch and a great man. He is training the young man next to him.
This is Daud in his shop. It reminds me of my father's shop. We advised him that he might want to organize it more.
